This is a huge caterpiller! Eating size, as I like to say. I wonder what sort of moth/butterfly it would turn out to be. I was almost interested in keeping it to see, but decided I would probably not be able to take care of it.
We also had problems with stink bugs in the fall, here is a picture showing them snuggled up in the poor fitting rear door:
